Race organisers are expecting record crowds at the 30th anniversary Huntly Half Marathon on 23rd May. With new sponsors and medals awarded to all half marathon finishers, the race is shaping up to be more popular than ever.
Both the Huntly and Hamilton communities strongly support the event and competitors appreciate the local feel. Running club Hamilton City Hawks has had a long-term involvement and it is one of the few remaining races organised solely by a club rather than an event promoter.
Race director Graham Dudfield from Hamilton City Hawks is excited about the expected growth of the event.
"It's always been a popular event and this year, being the 30th anniversary and the New Zealand Half Marathon Championships as well, we're getting ready for a big increase on the previous year's 2300 entrants".
The course was altered in 2009 and offers both variety and challenge. It crosses the Waikato River, before taking in the newly landscaped riverside wetlands path, a circuit of the picturesque Lake Hakanoa walkway and the Huntly East coal mine, before finishing at the spacious lakeside Huntly Domain. There is also a 10km event.
An important feature this year will be a celebration of the race's history, with festivities and displays of memorabilia at the Huntly Domain.
