Windsor Half Marathon turns 30 this year.

Entries are limited to 6000 and are expected to fill quickly.

This is a special event, run entirely on sealed roads within the Windsor Great Park, virtually in the shadow of Windsor Castle.

It is a large deer park of 20 sq km just south of Windsor, on the border of Berkshire and Surrey in England. It dates primarily from the mid-13th Century and was for many centuries the private hunting ground of Windsor Castle royalty. Now open to the public, it is owned and managed by the Crown Estate.

The half marathon is a runner friendly event with some hills but nothing impossible. The course is run in a clockwise direction beginning and ending on the Long Walk. There’s one small lap of about 4 miles, followed by a longer lap of about 7.5 miles.

Windsor Half Marathon is associated with the charities Prince Philip Trust and CRASH. At least £5 of each entry fee will go directly to one of these charities and participants are encouraged to raise more through sponsorship.

Just one day earlier is the now traditional Running4Women Windsor 8k run, being held for the seventh year.

The event began with the idea of introducing women to participating in organised running events and this is still the way it operates. It caters for all levels of ability, from those who have never participated in an event before to seasoned runners. All are treated as equals.

This is also held in the Great Park, beginning and ending on the Long Walk.

The start itself is gradually uphill for approximately 1 mile. It is not severe but it is noticeable. The rest of the course follows a circular route through the beautiful landscape of the Great Park and is best described as undulating – but the last mile to the finish is all downhill!

On this route, runners turn left at the Copper Horse, pass Bishops Gate, the Royal Lodge, Royal School and the Prince of Wales Pond on their way to the finish.
