He was one of the greatest runners of the 20thCentury. Czech Emil Zátopek achieved legendary status when he won the 5000m, the 10,000m and the marathon at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He is credited with revolutionising running training. His intense interval workouts have become standard today.

Zátopek died in 2000 but among his legacies are quotes that continue to inspire:-

"If you want to win something, run 100m. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

"You can't climb up to the second floor without a ladder....When you set your aim too high and don't fulfil it, then your enthusiasm turns to bitterness. Try for a goal that's reasonable and then gradually raise it."

"A runner must run with dreams in his heart, not money in his pocket.

Great is the victory but the friendship of all is greater."

If you want spectacular scenery all the way, you can’t beat Challenge Wanaka. It has been named the world’s most scenic race and won Triathlete’s Choice Award at the US Triathlon Business International Awards.
