Abu Dhabi’s iconic Corniche came alive with the sight of thousands of ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi age group participants and spectators on Saturday 5th March, for one of the world’s most exciting and picturesque triathlon events.
Over 2,000 athletes raced the multisport swim, bike, run course overlooking the UAE Capital’s beautiful coastline in perfect weather conditions, ahead of elite Olympic and World Champions.
The race featured three distances to suit people of all abilities – Sprint, Olympic and Maxi; attracting competitors from as far and wide as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, UAE, Egypt, Philippines, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Montenegro, Germany, Sweden, Russia, USA, Spain, Italy, Portugal, France and many more.
In the highly anticipated elite races, staged exactly five months before Rio 2016 gets underway, Spain’s Mario Mola started off the 2016 World Triathlon Series season exactly where he finished - on top of the podium, as he shook off a slow swim and a penalty to win the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi for the second consecutive year in front of thousands of spectators.
In the women’s race Great Britain’s Jodie Stimpson finally earned her way back to the top of the podium by winning the first race of the season, her first World Triathlon Series victory since 2014.
