Gold Coast Marathon

In one of the most desirable holiday destinations in the world - Australia's Gold Coast - is an event that motivates and challenges tens of thousands of people of all ages and abilities.

It is the Gold Coast Airport Marathon held annually on the first Sunday in July.

This year it will be staged on Sunday 5th July and features the 42.2km Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Asics Half Marathon, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Gold Coast Bulletin 5km Run/Walk and Junior Dash races for the kids over 4km and 2.25km.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is recognised worldwide for its fast, flat and scenic course and technical excellence, with international membership to AIMS and the IAAF.

Runners come from all over Australia and the world to experience the magnificent running conditions and beautiful course that runs alongside the Pacific Ocean surf beaches and Broadwater, with the hinterland as a glorious backdrop. The 2008 event attracted a record 21,012 runners from 30 countries with huge numbers particularly from Japan and New Zealand.

The Gold Coast Marathon was first staged in 1979 with just 691 runners and has grown to become one of the biggest and best holiday marathons in the world, attracting elite competitors, fun runners, walkers and kids as young as five.

The event is annually attended by Australian running legends Rob de Castella, Steve Moneghetti and Pat Carroll, and assembles a quality field of elite runners pursuing a slice of the large prizemoney pool on offer.

The event is also sanctioned as the Oceania Marathon and Half Marathon Championships, Queensland Marathon Championships, Australian Defence Marathon Championships, Queensland Masters Athletics Marathon Championships and Sporting Wheelies & Disabled Association Half Marathon Championships.

All finishers receive a commemorative medallion and shirt and other rewards in each race to mark the occasion and their personal achievement.

Thousands of spectators line the scenic course along with roving musicians and entertainers, creating an amazing atmosphere called "Runspiration" to help inspire and motivate participants.

Annual social events such as the Asics Sport & Leisure Expo and Legends Motivational Carbo Lunch ensure participants and supporters maximise their Gold Coast Airport Marathon experience.
