Ironman Australia

If you are really serious about triathlons, you can't beat Ironman Australia at Port Macquarie, in New South Wales.

Not only is this a fabulous course but it also offers 70 qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

The 3.8km swim takes place in the beautiful Hastings River, which feeds a network of canals and waterways around Port Macquarie. Spectators line the banks of the river near Westport Park to view a spectacular start to the two-lap swim course. (Wetsuits are permitted.)

One of the most stunning Ironman bike courses in the world, the 180km cycle winds along beside the Pacific Ocean on the beautiful and undulating Pacific Drive. A section of the three-lap cycle route takes athletes through the city centre waterfront where thousands of spectators can view the race surrounded by the conveniences of cafes, shopping centres and restaurants.

Finally, there is the three-lap 42.2km run again taking athletes though the city centre and along parts of Pacific Drive. The route combines rolling hills with beautiful scenery to provide excellent viewing for both athletes and spectators before finishing at Westport Park, the home of Ironman Australia.

Ideally situated at the mouth of the Hastings River and the blue Pacific Ocean, Port Macquarie is a water-lovers paradise. It boasts 15 pristine beaches, most of them patrolled, lining the coast from Port Macquarie south to the Camden Haven. You can enjoy coastal walks, surfing, sail boarding, swimming, fishing, whale watching, and even camel rides.

Weather conditions are typically pleasant Australian late summer/early autumn days. It is usually dry and sunny during daylight hours but the nights are quite cool.
