For those who delight in their Scottish ancestry, perhaps Homecoming 2009 is the year to make the journey and join in Scotland's largest mass participation event; the Great Scottish Run. Homecoming 2009 is a 12-month celebration of world-renowned Scottish poet Rabbie Burns, who was born 250 years ago.

Or, if you simply have a burning desire to visit, this is the time to join 20,000 runners in Scotland's most prestigious road race through Glasgow - "one of the best places to go in the world right now" according to Lonely Planet in its Top 10 must-see cities for 2009.

The Great Scottish Run, supported by Lloyds TSB and Bank of Scotland, will race through Glasgow on Sunday 6th September. It offers runners a half-marathon or 10K race option, plus a junior 1.5K and 3K for youths, on Saturday 5th September.

Thrill to the skirl of the pipes as talented musicians line the route, letting you know the next distance mark is approaching and that with every stride you are almost there.

Renowned for its big crowds, friendly atmosphere and famous buildings and backdrops along the route in and around the city, including the iconic Kingston Bridge and the beautiful Glasgow Green, this race provides all the motivation you'll need to sprint across the finish line.
