The 6th annual Navy 5 Miler took place on 20 September 2009 with the weather offering up ideal temperate conditions, no wind and no humidity, for the 1,400 entrants. The course had a new start and finish point this year on Boundary Channel Drive between the Pentagon and beautiful Lyndon B Johnson Memorial Park of Arlington, VA. It was a very flat and fast course which took runners past the Pentagon, down Washington Boulevard and along Columbia Pike. The race attracted participants from other parts of the US and overseas, and from all walks of life.
The title sponsor was SAIC (Science Applications International Corporation) for the second year running and their key motivation is to help support programmes and services that improve the life of the US Military and their families. All proceeds from the race go towards the same cause.
1,100 of the 1,400 entrants finished the race with the male winner being Benjamin Ingram with a time of 00:26:36, and the female winner Lyon Makely, just five minutes behind with a time of 00:31:53.
