The Coventry half marathon is new to the BIG-Q event series and will be staged on 2 October on behalf of the council in order to establish a mass participation running race in this Midlands city. There is a new route set for the 2011 race and discounts are available for those signing up for both the English half marathon and the Coventry half marathon.
The inaugural Coventry half marathon took place in 2005 and attracted 1,900 half marathon runners and 500 fun runners. Organisers hope to build on the race's popularity and turn it into a nationally noted event with entrants travelling across the country to take part. There is also a 1 mile Fun Run scheduled for 1 October from the War Memorial park.
There's still plenty of training time left to enter the Warrington's Spira Healthcare English half marathon which will take place on Sunday 18 September. This patriotic race is billed as The People's Challenge and takes place as part of a week end long festival of running that also features a Fun Run and Team Relay. The reason for its name – The People's Challenge – is to encourage runners of all abilities from first timers to elites to participate and take up the challenge to enjoy the grandstand finish at Victoria Park's main arena.
To help those who are keen to take part but not sure how to embark on training, the event's website offers 3 training programmes to chose from. Each plan is a 12 week schedule to get runners ready for the half marathon distance.
