Don't miss this unique, exhilarating Mountain Bike Relay event. This was the largest MTB event in New Zealand last year with more than 3,000 riders participating.
Individuals, teams of two/three or four/five compete on an 8km, 30 minute circuit over 12 hours from 10am to 10pm or 6 hours from 10am to 4pm. Both grades ride the same circuit which has been specifically designed for the event to cater for riders of all ability levels.
The Grade 2 track includes fast open park grounds, awesome downhill, pine needle covered forest tracks, challenging single tracks and magnificent scenery including the mighty Waikato River.
A popular option for kids is the Hell Pizza Little Devils Ride. It’s an exciting 7km one lap ride of the Day Night track through tent city to the finish line.
This is an amazing experience open to little devils aged between 8-13 years. The ride is supervised by experienced mountain bike riders.
All teams are allocated a tent site at Spa Park, Taupo, where the event is based. Riders change over at their site after each lap and the winner is the team that completes the most laps in the quickest time inside the six or 12 hour limit.
SBS Hamilton Half Marathon makes a feature of the city’s Waikato River – but organisers have an alternative course if the riverbank course is closed.
This is the second year the event has operated from new headquarters at Flagstaff Park, from where participants face a scenic and challenging course.
The river course for the feature event takes in a loop of Harrowfield before heading south on River Rd, using riverside paths where possible. It crosses to the west side of the river over Victoria Bridge and follows the river north, with a detour through Braithwaite Park before crossing the pedestrian bridge by Alandale and heading back to finish at Flagstaff Park.
Participants in the 10km and 5km will take in river paths and some of Hamilton’s beautiful northern parks.
Organisers have this year designed an alternative course in case of floods or slips on the Waikato River banks. If needed, the all-weather course takes athletes into the countryside north of Hamilton - away from potential hazards along the river.
The Kids’ Marathon also returns. This unique event offers 5-18 year-olds a chance to complete a marathon, one kilometre at a time in the lead up to the Hamilton Half Marathon. They finish with a final 2.195km run within Flagstaff Park, along the actual half marathon course.
