London mayor Boris Johnson rode 8 hours to complete the first Ride London-Surrey 100 mile race – along with almost 20,000 others.  In doing so, the keen cyclist has has helped to create an iconic event in its inaugural year.

The route ran from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, through east, central and south west London to Surrey, then back through central London to finish at The Mall.  Boris started the race by waving a Union flag, then set off himself with wife Marina and 35 other members of 'Team Boris'.

Boris can often be found cycling around London.  His support for the sport is such that the public bikes available for hire throughout the capital are known affectionately as “Boris bikes”.

Sibling rivalry continued between the Brownlee brothers at the ITU World Series race in Hamburg.  This time Jonathan pipped Alistair to gold medal victory, with both finishing in 51:05.
