Windermere and wetsuits

Surrounded by some of the nation’s most spectacular natural scenery - the Lake District National Park - the Great North Swim was an inspiring outdoor swim in the picturesque Lake Windermere.

With a choice of distances, the race was open to all abilities from those who could swim half a mile, 1 mile, 2 miles or 5km.  All they needed was a wetsuit!

The Great North Swim was the perfect excuse to enjoy a weekend trip to make the most of the Lake District’s beautiful countryside attractions.

Windermere is England’s longest lake at 10.5 miles long (17km), stretching from Ambleside in the North to Newby Bridge in the South.  The breathtaking scenery of the area acts as a natural adventure playground – as well as Windermere, it boasts England's highest mountain (Scafell Pike), deepest lake (Wastwater) and steepest road (Hardknott Pass).  It’s also the region that inspired world-renowned poets and writers such as Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Where else could you find such a variety of world-class outdoor activities in such an accessible and compact region?
