“A great day for the marathon in Canada, a great day for Canadian marathoning and a great day for our city” was the race day reaction of Alan Brookes, Race Director of the 2013 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.  He wasn’t the only one who was happy that day, either.

Canada’s largest city turned on near perfect conditions for what was to be a record breaking day in Toronto. After 28 years the Canadian women’s marathon record was finally broken - and by two runners!  Lanni Marchant finished in 2:28:00 to knock 36 seconds off Sylvia Ruegger’s long standing record, while Krista DuChene also beat the record with a time of 2:28:33.  The two Canadians placed 3rd and 4th respectively overall.

Deressa Chimsa of Ethiopia set the fastest ever time on Canadian soil – 2:07:05 – as he ran hard to win the men’s marathon event.  Kenya’s Solomon Kiptoo and Ethiopia’s Habtamu Assefa were just a few minutes behind to round out the podium for the men’s event.  Kenyan Flomena Cheyech took out first place in the women’s marathon in a time of 2:25:13, with Ethiopia’s Sechale Adugna picking up second place in 2:26:43.

Participants, organisers and enthusiastic supporters all had a great time at the 2013 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.  Let the countdown begin for next year!

A record 17,000 participants turned out for the 2013 edition of New Zealand’s premier running event – the Auckland Marathon.

In gorgeous spring weather, runners began their journey in Devonport, with supporters on the streets and excitement in the air.

Offering exquisite views of the very best of Auckland, as well as the unique opportunity to run over the harbour bridge, the Auckland Marathon is very much a world class event.

The course, the organisation and the atmosphere are as good as any event in the world and entries are highly sought after, often selling out in a few weeks.  Auckland Marathon has become a real “bucket list” event for keen distance runners.

Samuel Wreford of Timaru absolutely roasted the rest of the field to take out the men’s marathon by more than 6 minutes, winning in a time of 2:18:57.  Women’s winner, Kirsten Molloy, crossed the finish in 2:52:24.

After the racing was through, a day of family fun ensued near the finish line in Victoria Park, where competitors finally got the chance to relax, put their feet up and bask in their personal achievement.  And as if the vibe wasn’t positive enough already, the event raised more than $1 million for charity!

Next year’s event promises to be just as good, so start planning now for a super day in the super city!
