Unexpectedly comfortable weather conditions accompanied the always expected razzle-dazzle of the city for the 2013 edition of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon.

A race built around the city’s abundant landmarks and vibrant atmosphere, participants were able to enjoy their 42.195km journey in what locals described as ‘perfect conditions’.

As has been the case for four years in a row, the competitive side of the race belonged to Kenya.

Chelimo Luka Kipkemoi won the men’s Marathon event with a time of 2:14:59, with fellow Kenyan’s Eliud Kiptanui and Mike Mutai rounding out the men’s podium. In the women’s marathon, Kenyan Sharon Cherop beat out Ethiopian Debre Godana by less then a second to win in a time of 2:41:11. Russia’s Prokopeva Alina finished third.

The elite, competitive racing action is just one part of the event however, and following these impressive elite athletes were thousands of participants who were equally impressive in giving their all and challenging their personal bests.

Hundreds of volunteers and thousands of spectators crowded the marathon route to create a vivacious atmosphere for all participants; and it is this atmosphere and spectacle which keeps runners coming back year after year for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon.

Run on a city circuit which is among the world’s most exciting, the Singapore Marathon, as always, turned it on in 2013.

160km of hard peddling came down to a sprint finish between two very determined riders in the ultra exciting 2013 edition of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.

Michael Torckler and Mike Northey broke from the pack and engaged in a one-on-one duel to the finish, where Torckler was first to break the line in a time of 3:46:47, little more than half a second ahead of Northey. The elite women’s 100km event title was claimed by Reta Trotman in 2:58:54, a comparatively comfortable 10 seconds separating her from second place getter Hannah Van Kampen.

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is an event which caters superbly for everyone from elite riders right down to more casual ‘weekend warriors’ who give it their all. The event included 20 different events, with different categories and distances for solo, relay, men, women, children, tandems, mountain bikers and more. Over 8000 cyclists and supporters from around the world effectively took over the idyllic town of Taupo on race weekend, creating a positive, exciting vibe around the event.

As if a brilliantly organised event and great atmosphere wasn’t enough, participants were treated to really quite striking views of Lake Taupo, Australasia’s largest lake. Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge once again proved its status as one of the world’s best cycle events in 2013.
