The first event in the Great Run 2015 calendar saw several thousand people brave challenging conditions in Edinburgh in the Morrisons Great Winter Run and Junior Great Winter Run.

The mass participation events were part of a packed schedule of athletics featuring the Morrisons Great Edinburgh XCountry. Team USA were winners of the International Team Challenge, which saw junior and senior teams from GB & N.I. take on the USA and Europe.

One of the highlights of the day saw Team GB & N.I.’s Emelia Gorecka emerge from the mud and hailstones of Holyrood Park to record a stunning individual victory in front of a shivering home crowd to win the Women’s International senior 6k challenge.

The USA was also victorious in the Men’s Invitational 4k with Garrett Heath, the defending champion, retaining his title.

The winners of the inaugural International Mixed Relay were England’s Gemma Kersey and James Bowness, followed by Jemma Simpson and Ross Murray for Team GB, with Laura Muir and Ross Matheson third for Scotland.

Nick Collard, Group Marketing and Customer Director said: “It was great to see so many participants out on the stunning Edinburgh course for the first Morrisons-sponsored Great Run. The weather conditions were tough but some great times were achieved by the runners, some of whom included Morrisons customers and colleagues. We thank everyone who ran for charity, including our partner Sue Ryder, as it will help support their valuable work across the country.”

Event Director Alex Jackson commented, “We were delighted to see so many enthusiastic runners and spectators brave the cold January weather to take part in the Morrisons Great Winter Run, and provide such a warm welcome to the elite international athletes competing in the Morrisons Great Edinburgh XCountry events.

“This year’s event was the most popular yet and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making it such a success, in particular to those who took part and came out to support.

“We look forward to welcoming more runners to our next event in

Edinburgh on April 19th.
