Frank Shorter has played a significant role in the growth of marathons and is the only American athlete to win two medals in Olympic marathons.

In November he was honoured by AIMS with a Lifetime Achievement Award, at the Best Marathon Runner Award Gala.

Frank won marathon Gold at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and Silver in the marathon at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada.

He was a founding member of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and served as Chairman from 2000 to 2003.

“I am delighted and honoured to receive this award from AIMS. I have watched with great pride as the Marathon Movement has grown and developed particularly since the 1970’s,” Frank said in a statement. The award was accepted on his behalf by son, Alex.

The AIMS Green Award for environmental achievement went to The Chevron Houston Marathon, in recognition of their year-round efforts towards “Going Green”.

The Chevron Houston Marathon closely follows the Council for Responsible Sport’s certification standards. These efforts include a senior manager overseeing all sustainability goals and a “Green Committee” formed to work towards attaining them.

The AIMS Social Award was presented to the Maratón Internacional Lala, Mexico, for their work raising money for children from low income areas who need dental surgery. In 2015 money was raised to fund 50 operations for children with severe dental problems.

It then follows the river, running beneath the dramatic outline of Inverness Castle. A warm welcome finally awaits all runners as they approach the finish line at Queen’s Park Stadium. Runners love this race – and if the half is too far, try the 5km fun run instead.
