Records fell at the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running when Fife AC runner Megan Crawford smashed the women’s course record to take the tape in 2:44:50.

She took more than two minutes off the previous course record to finish ahead of Belgrave’s Gatenesh Tamirat, and Shona McManus (Kelvin Runners), who took third.

The winner of the marathon event for the second time in three years was Tarus Elly. The Kenyan, who now lives in Hyde, was only a few seconds outside his best time when sprinting home in 2:25:19.

Four-time previous champion Tomas Abyu, from Salford, had to settle for second position in 2:27:37 while Patryk Gierjatowicz (Hunters Bog Trotters) collected the Scottish national title for the third year in a row when finishing a further 10secs behind.

Over 8,000 runners took part in the day’s race programme, which also includes the River Ness 10K, 10K Corporate Challenge, River Ness 5K Fun Run and The Wee Nessie for pre-schoolers.
