Every year on Queen’s Birthday Sunday, close to 6000 entrants stop the South Island of New Zealand’s largest city in its tracks. Based in downtown Christchurch, with the start/finish line amidst the café, casino, shopping and accommodation districts, the marathon has become a popular mid-winter getaway for participants. With a full marathon, half marathon, 10km fun run and a Kids “Mara’fun”, this festival of fitness had something for everyone.
A $40,000 prize pool made it New Zealand’s richest running event and all participants were in with a chance for $15,000 worth of spot prizes. In addition, the event celebrated its 30th birthday with a special commemorative medal for all finishers.
