The Netherlands greatest running party is back in Rotterdam in April 2013 and promises to be as good as ever. The combination of the world’s best athletes, 925,000 enthusiastic spectators and a festival atmosphere makes the Rotterdam marathon a special event every year.

ABN Amro Marathon Rotterdam has a reputation for being a fast, runner friendly course,

and statistics of years gone by conclusively back this up:- three world record runs; fastest ever time on Dutch soil; fastest time worldwide in 2009 and 2010. The course record for the marathon is a blistering 2:04:27 set by Duncan Kibet in 2009.  If you want to set your personal best, go to Rotterdam!

This year the third edition of the “Heartbeat of Rotterdam” will take place. This involves over 30 bands, DJs and orchestras taking to the marathon course to encourage and entertain runners with motivating live music.

The event’s buzzing atmosphere has always wowed participants, but the “Heartbeat of Rotterdam” initiative has made it one of the world’s liveliest events.

Beginning at the Coolsingel, the marathon course is revered as one of the most appealing in the world. It is said the city of Rotterdam ‘gives itself’ to the marathon on race day and the marathon course and spectator numbers are testament to this.

From Coolsingel, the course heads immediately towards and over the magnificent Erasmus Bridge and towards the impressive Stadion Feijenoord.

After taking a wide loop around parts of the sprawling city, the course runs alongside the Maashaven and Nieuwe Maas waterways and back over the Erasmus Bridge.

Runners then track through the city centre and towards Kralingse Plas, a beautiful lake surrounded by green parks and iconic Dutch houses and windmills. After circumnavigating the lake the course heads back towards the city centre where it finishes in front of a large, rapturous crowd at Coolsingel.

In addition to the marathon, 10km, 5km and Kids 1km and 2.5km events are also offered to participants. Runners of all abilities are welcomed, with the field made up of athletes ranging from the world’s elite through to those running their very first event.

Regardless of whether you’re trying to set the world record or trying to set your personal best, if you want an exciting and inspiring running experience on a fast, friendly course, the ABN Amro Marathon Rotterdam is perfect for you!
