Ever since Kathrine Switzer upset organisers with her legitimate entry in the 1967 Boston Marathon, women have taken to distance running.

They run for health, fitness and friendship. There are women-only events throughout the world designed to encourage as they build strength and confidence for mixed events. Triathlon PINK is a popular series in Australia. United Kingdom has Running4Women Windsor and a women’s 10k in Glasgow. In Denmark there’s Kvindelobet.

When they’re ready, women choose half and full marathon distances. In some events they make up more than 50% of the half marathon field – and the satisfaction at the finish line is huge. As Kathrine Switzer says, women feel empowered by running – and its popularity is growing.

Italian cross-country ski race Granfondo Val Casies, also known as Gsiesertal Lauf, has grown increasingly popular since its debut in 1984. Participants can choose a 30km or 42km course in the beautiful South Tyrol.
