The awe-inspiring Lake Taupo is home to New Zealand’s leading cycling event.

This gigantic crater left by an ancient eruption is now New Zealand’s largest lake. The surrounding lake edge provides a spectacular location for a world class cycling event.

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge pulls in over 8000 riders each year from more than 20 countries around the globe.

Best known for the full 160km course where participants circumnavigate the lake, this classic route is an up-hill, downhill on-road journey that’s a visual feast of lake shores, forests and rural farmland.

If 160km sounds like a bit of a stretch, never fear; it is just one of 20 categories on offer. Differing distances in both road cycling and mountain bike options for individuals and groups cater to all levels of cycling and fitness abilities.

The relay categories prove very popular because everything is more fun with friends! With times between 4 and 10 hours this is an event designed for every level of cyclist.

However for those crazy enough to consider the 160km as easy as a ride in the park, why not take on an Enduro event and complete 2, 4 or 8 laps of the 160km course?

Lake Taupo is considered the event capital of New Zealand and has a lot to offer to both cyclists and spectators.

Grab the family, con in some mates, get your crew together and join the starters at The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.
